Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern

We are seeking a GIS Intern to support the cooperative’s Geographic Information System (GIS) by assisting with mapping, data management, and spatial analysis related to electric distribution and fiber optic distribution assets.

Pay: $15.16 per hour

Work Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  This is a summer time intern position.  Negotiable work period to begin mid-May through mid-August depending on school schedule.

POSITION SUMMARY

The GIS Intern will support the cooperative’s Geographic Information System (GIS) by assisting with mapping, data management, and spatial analysis related to electric distribution and fiber optic distribution assets. This position is ideal for a college student interested in GIS, geography, engineering support, or utility operations.  Assignments can be tailored somewhat to the areas of interest of the individual.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist with maintaining and updating GIS maps of electric distribution facilities
  2. Enter, edit, and verify spatial and attribute data for system assets
  3. Support field data collection and verification using GPS or mobile tools
  4. Assist engineering and operations staff with map requests and data exports
  5. Help improve data accuracy and consistency within GIS databases
  6. Create basic maps and visualizations for internal use
  7. Document GIS processes and data standards
  8. Perform other GIS or data-related tasks as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  2. Pursuing a degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field
  3. Basic understanding of GIS concepts and spatial data
  4. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  5. Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
  6. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
  7. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  8. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test. 
  9. Must have a valid Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience with Esri ArcGIS, ArcMap, or ArcGIS Online
  2. Coursework or experience with utility mapping or infrastructure data
  3. Familiarity with GPS data collection
  4. Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
  5. Interest in electric utilities or infrastructure systems

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Duties are performed inside and outside in inclement weather.
  2. Must be able to perform duties as stated above.
  3. Activities are performed driving, sitting, kneeling, standing, and walking.
